I am seeing how this Speedster thing can become pandora's box when you start thinking customizing. None the less...

I found a website and they make a reverse-cut ring & pinion to suit Subaru transmissions.

Apparently this allows you to use a Subie trans mounted directly 180 into a VW bug. So now you can have a 5 speed. Also if you have a Subie engine you have a complete drive-train from one manufacturer (customizing aside).

The question then comes to
1) is this a good idea?

2) nearly 5 grand for a complete reworked trans. Is it worth it?

3) how do you get a trans turned 180 to shift properly?

4) Would it fit directly into your favorite speedster considering the VW pan has been shortened??

5) some question that i should be asking yet am too uninformed to know what it is.

Just trying to get an idea of the best power train for the car.

Subaru Power seems like a lot of fun because you can get a factory turbo engine not a hot rod job.

Then again naturally Aspirated VW engine are capable of the same BHP so really what is the better option? A big bore air cooled VW or deal with all the ECU's and radiators for a Subie?

Is the 4 speed enough for the experience or would a five speed be the better option?

Also you have to imagine i will probably get a car second hand so it will most likely be a VW pan type car. I am then going to want to find the best way to get close to or over 200bhp. The less i have to cut an mod in the garage the better.

I just wanna go fast but not break down on the way to Vegas
3) Because of the subie trans shift pattern and the design of the vw shifter, when you flip the subie trans to put it in the vw chassis, the shift pattern works out correctly. The only thing is the shift coupling needs to be offset slightly but there is enough flex that it doesn't affect shifting.

4) The pan shortening doesn't affect anything for this conversion. It'll fit, but you have to fab extra trans mounts and fab motor mounts that extend from the frame horns to support the engine. The subie engine isn't really designed to hang from the bellhousing like the vw. smallcar.com sells the engine mount.
I have a new Suby 2 wheel drive transmission sitting around my shop takeing up space. I bought it several years ago for a project that I did ultimately without the Suby. I am not certain which model car it is for....everything today is 4 wheel drive....so it is several years old, but "new" from dealer inventory. I can supply the part number if anyone is interested. It would be cheap.....but shipping needs be considered....drop me a note if interested in more information...or ask here.....
Oh and i now have a better tranny mount than the one pictured above Its a 3x6 L bracket that bolts to the tranny and uses Gm swaybar bushings that are bolted to the U of the pan.

It'salmost a zero clearance mount helping you move the tranny forward a bit..

I did it on my super beetle. i need to upgrade my D If that mount ever goes bad.
