thinking of going taller in the rear tire, and was wondering what you can get away with before they might come in contact with upper wheelwell if that can even happen, cmc widebody with swingaxle, thanks
I have run 225/50’s on the rear with 6” and 7” wide, 16” diameter rims. They are very slightly taller with the 6” rims and begin to rub on the underside of the body on hard cornering IF the body is low enough to the ground.
You can always adjust the rear torsion bars to lift it up enough to stop rubbing on the underside of the body.
I remember someone at Carlisle had a pair of 245X15’s on the rear but the rims were smaller and he had raked the stance to be higher in the rear. I think they were 40-series tires, too.
I have 255/40R 17” on the rear of my vintage speedster and haven’t had any trouble with them hitting the fenders.Not sure about the differences

A taller tire will give a faster cruising speed at any rpm but it will also slow down acceleration through the gears. With a big engine it won't be so noticeable but if the engine is stock stroke (1915 or smaller) you may not like the result. A taller tire also means more sidewall flex and less predictable handling so there's that to think about as well. Al

Al, I love that online tool. The diameter/height difference of almost 2 inches is pretty significant.
So do I Danny- it's a great way to compare gear changes (and I know you know this, but for some of the others out there- tire size is part of the gearing).
