Well, I hooked up with Marty Grzynkowicz and his very nice Silver Vintage wide body Sunday ... The Bears were off! We took it out for a quick spin to check out his nice T1 2275 . Man does that car have some interior room in the cockpit. I'm jealous. He did have a little bit of a stumble in ist gear and also said something about MPG . So it was back to Joe's garage ! Usually the commom problems w/Da Webers is dirty idle jets . Easy thing to remedy... ya right! Well the set up was a bit tight to get to the idle jets. I took 10 -20 minutes to get each one removed . Ya we BS a bit too! First round we cleaned #3 & #4 . Took it for a spin and still a bit sluggish . So it was back to Joe's garage again ! Cleaned out #2 & #1 . Went for a spin and the results were not good! I was starting loosing Marty's confidence and I was starting to get Murphy'ed . Well I started to eliminate any other possiblities ie loose wires, checked the timing and everything was fine . I was a bit stumped . We even called Marty's engine builder for a few tech tips . After talking to the builder a few light bulbs pop up . It was something about the low idle circuit is bypass at 2500- 3000 rpm and the main jets are in charge . Yes we were still getting that bobble during acceleration. The carbs were just as stubborn as I was . Well back to square one with the idle jet settings . Slowly adjusting each one . All adjusted except #3 . What was the possiblity that the #3 idle jet was clogged again( hours later). It must be that Shell gas Marty uses. Well the jet was pulled again and cleaned . Success! No sputter .
On the lighter side I did give Marty a quick ride in the ORANGE Speedster. Well we lined up at at a red light with a Z28 ... and of course I had to do something. We beat it off the line and stay with it a bit ... up to 110. Sorry about that Marty!
Hope Marty and all who's going to the dragon tail run has a great time. I would go if my son's football season was over and my car had heat. The other project car will have heat.
Later!

Filters may help a bit ..though there is chance of tiny particles to accumulate at the idle jets over time . Since I have installed the jet doctors on my webers I have not had any issue since. Marty has them on order.

Unfortunately we got smoked in the midrange of the run. My car was still pulling strong at 110. I do have a slight clutch slip from 3rd to 4th which does kill the overall 1/4 ET. Since I'm not running for $$ I'll live with a little slippage.
Too bad we didn't have a bit more runway .....Marty could of experienced 135.

In regards to the idle jets becomming clogged. Next time, remove the air filters and thoroughly clean the air cleaner base and any exposed portion of the carburetor. If dirt is present at this location, it will find its way into the idle circuit and eventually into the idel jet. When setting up off road vehicles with carburetors, a thin layer of grease is smeared on the above described surfaces to capture and hold any foreign particles of dirt so they don't get into the idle jets.
That's somewhat like the check that was done on my Cutlass (airplane) one time. I was rolling down the runway for takeoff and it was clear that I had a lot less power than normal. I was worried about taking off so I came to a stop and taxied back to the mechanic.

He felt one cylinder was not working and to see which one he took a regular crayon and made a mark on each of the cylinder's exhaust manifolds. The engine was run up then shut down. The cylinder that had the crayon mark that did not run was the bad one. A bad spark plug was the culprit and of course the cylinder didn't get hot enough to melt the guilty cylinder.

A new spark plug solved the problem.

Tricks of the trade.

Glad to see Marty's car got straightened out---nothing worse than a car that's not running right!
I usually scan each exhaust tube with a IR Temp gun looking for the pipe that is the coolest . The gun didn't work since my kids had my last battery in one of their toys. Once you have identified the cold port then you can work on the process of elimintaion ie plug, ignition wire , idle jet etc. See we firest cleaned out all the idle jets . It really did not register in the ol nog that one of the jets would clog up shortly after cleaning. Add this to a chapter in Murphy's law .
Re: filters: i do not think these are the problem since the dirt in question gets in through the vents at the top of the carbs, either direcdtly into the idle air jet or down into the float chamber. Jet doctors lift the air jet intakes up into the space above the carb top and so minimize the chance of a dirt sliding in. the grease gambit catches bits that might work in under the air filter rubber seal. I have recently heard that some fuel filters paper or composite kind are not all that compatible w/ the ethanol now put in the gas, and so they can break down because of. I'm not 100% on this explanation, but it could be.
