Jon, thank you. That really helps anyone who may be interested in purchasing.

For anyone who is looking, those are all stock gears, and the 1-2 is a later version, featuring the 3.80 first which happens to be stronger than the usual and almost identical ratio 3.78 from the earlier cars(pre '72).

It is sometimes erroneously referred to as a "Super Beetle" mainshaft. It is not. It is merely all transmissions from '73 and up.

Danny, I think you got that backwards.  3.80 is the early main shaft.  The 3.78 is the later, “Super Beetle” main shaft.

Oops, thanks for the correction, Rick. Bottom line, later=stronger/better.

FYI, I've had an early(3.80) 1st for 45k, beat the snot out of it. Roasted the tires MANY times, dumped the clutch etc. 180hp doesn't seem to be too much for early first with a 3.44 final.

Any rebuilt transmission with stock gears and stock R & P is not "all new". It may have new synchros and bearings, but most all the gears and cases and housings are from the 1960s.

And in my best Ahnold voice: "It's not a Super Beetle shaft"!

Guys, you're probably not going to break first gear (even the early 3.80)  unless you're running really sticky tires, the suspension is set for drag racing  and there's enough power that you're lifting the front wheels off the ground (160 or so hp).  Of course, with those that side step the clutch regularly, all bets are off- some people could break a crowbar in a sandbox.

And yes, the later 3.78 isn't a super beetle only thing.  They came in all type 1 transaxles starting in late '72? (I will ask Bruce, my resident transaxle specialist).
