Well don't know for sure if the turbo put on my 1915cc aided & abetted the demise of my transmission, but a stong clicking sound is coming from it now. The clicking is eng driven it becomes louder when under a load ie climding a hill. The clicking can be felt at the shifter and speeds up when down shifting. At idle with my head under the car I can hear the clicking deffinitely from the trans. Anyone have ideas?

Aye George these things can be opportunities. I am ordering up a bugtrans(.com) maxflyer. 3.88 r&p close ratio gears with 4th allowing 70mph @ 3400rpm. All put together with strong parts & sporty town driving in mind.
It seems like someone talked about urathane trans mounts which is what I'll probably go with, though I am unclear if the rubber oems are perferred due to the give they have?
While the engine is out I'll replace some rod tube seals that are leaking. Dream about some AJ Simms 044's that I've been coveting. But probably settle for re-torqueing what's there & wait for new heads with a new eng combo.
How do you get your head under the car while the transmission is engaged to hear a clicking sound? A clicking sound may be the CG joint! Bet ya it's the right side. That's easy and cheap and you will definately want to upgrade those halfshafts to like 924s. Most tranny problems I've had are wherrs, jumping out of gear, hard shifting, won't go in certain gears, etc... Heck, it it's only clicking then nail that puppy till it breaks. Usually you'll get a slack feeling when you shift under power as the gears feel like they are twisting a bit (actually, the tranny shafts are flexing as stuff is starting to come apart. Lots of fun. I'm betting we are talking CV joints. 8)

Jack, Think I nailed it once or twice just to get it clicking ; ) Unfortunately CV joints its not. When in neutral at idle the clutch peddle is not engaged and something in the trans is spinning that is clicking. I was told it could be the input shaft. The clutch and throw-out bearing looks good, there has been leaking from the seal on the tranny, what ever else but approx. $350 for a dis- & re-assemble, $160 for gasket rbuild kit, plus what ever $ parts is associated with the sound, or use the rebuildable for a core and go with something all fresh built for the torque and HP.
But..The 924 half shafts you mention are they a direct replacemnet or have to altered to fit vw size diffs and hubs?

Add: Finished replacing the tranny & I just developed a greater appreciation for builders of these cars. What a task.

If Victor's 3.88 CR box brings the revs down to 3400 at 70 mph in top gear, instead of 3200 or thereabouts at 50 mph, which is what mine does with the standard 4.3 ratio box, does that mean the even higher ratio (3.44) will give enable a further 20 mph for the same number of revs? I was expecting to achieve 70 mph at 3400 with the 3.44 box, not the 3.88.
Paul, Just went out to check. Sure enough 70mph @ 3400rpm is confirmed with 195/65 15's mounted to 7" rims. My tach may read a little lower rpm.
with a r&p of 3.88
1st 3.78
2nd 2.06
3rd 1.58
4th .89
Getting use to the close gears. At first shifting from 2nd to 3rd felt like going from 2nd to 2 1/2. The gearing change works smooth when the revs are kept up and acceleration is desired.
Going from 3rd to 4th seems a bit of a reach but not so much as to complain. Making use of the 3.5k to 4.5k range more before stepping off to 4th. A 5th gear squeezed in there would be nice, but that would double the cost too.
