I am finding this thread late but be prepared to spend $15-18K for a top of the line type4 engine. I have $4500.00 in my heads alone and at least $15k in the 2.8L type 4 that is in my Puma. The power is intoxicating. I had a 2.4L type 4 in a steel flared 916 look alike some years ago and it was a rocket. My Type 4 engine was a Jake Raby engine that I had rebuilt and punch out from 2054cc to 2800cc. I an thinking of selling the type4 Puma this spring or selling the engine and car separately possibly.

Jimmy. It will be in the upper end of that. Trusting Pat Downs will build a quality engine.

Bruce yes I had a Caterham Super 7 in 2004. Slightly bored out 2.1L Zetec Ford engine with EFI and 4 throttle bodies. About 210hp. Fastest car I’ve ever owned.  Best 5 speed shifter ever. Scary fast.  Faster than my current Suby Spyder. Sold it before I moved back to VA. Going from 4 car garage in FL to 2 car garage in VA. It was an insane go kart with your butt about 2 inches from the pavement. And did I mention butt because it was butt ugly.

So it has begun. Pat Downs will be building me a 2.65 L Type 4. Completion time for the engine is almost a year. Sounds like his business is taking off very fast. It’s crazy how much I’m paying for this engine but the power train will be full Porsche. Plan on using a 901 or 915 tranny. I actually liked the 901 in my 914 so I might do that. It won’t be the 911 car but it will be pretty close and I get my convertible with hard top. I think I’ll deliver my Dells personally to Pat so I can meet the legend.

I'm sure I'll get out there on occasion to help him with it.

Robert. Thanks so much for hooking me up with Pat. I think it will be a special engine.
Ray. Me and my wife are from Virginia. We met at VA Tech. When I got out of the military I couldn’t find a job in VA or the Carolina’s so I went to FL. Always knew I’d move back to VA. All of our extended family is here. My kids are smart and told me they were going to UVA out of state. So I moved back. Other than California it’s one of the only states you can be driving through the mountains in the morning and sitting on the beach as the sun sets that night. I own a little house in Charlottesville and another house a block from the beach (Chesapeake Bay) in Norfolk. I love VA.

The Revolutionary War ended in Yorktown VA. The Civil War ended in Appomattox VA. More presidents including Washington, Jefferson and Madison were from VA than any other state. These 3 president’s homes are museums in VA. Jefferson’s home Monticello and Madison’s home Montpelier are near Charlottesville. No state has more American history than Virginia…if that’s your thing.

My wife and I lived in Potomac MD. for several years and spent a lot of weekends in the Virginia countryside. Absolutely magical if you are a history buff. Wonderful B&B's like the Clifton (Jefferson's daughters home) Laura Ashley's place, and the Inn at Little Washington.

And there are terrific roads.

If you go, just wander for a few days. Don't plan too much, just let the place entertain you.

Just checked eBay for T4 914 engine cores.  Was surprised how much they have gone up.  An empty case is $1k and 1.7 core $1500 -- on up to $2k.  For those looking for a core to rebuild - ALL the cases are the same (1.7/1.8/2.0).  The 1.7/1.8 have 66 mm throw crank while the 2.0 has 71 mm throw.  So if you are going after market say a 78 mm crank - the case doesn't matter.  1.7/1.8 heads are near same but the 2.0 has a different (better for performance) spark plug location, different intake mounting and larger valves - if you are using aftermarket heads - again it doesn't matter.  All used heads will require checking for cracks.  Early 1.7L had sodium filled valves. Heads can be welded and repaired but you may opt for new heads.  All FI T4 will require a new cam shaft as FI ones aren't designed to run with carbs.  The 914 215mm flywheel will not work with a T1 trans - it will need to be machined, replaced with a bus flywheel or a custom flywheels - plus an AT or 914 starter is required (it doesn't use the bearing in the trans - it's called a self supporting starter.  A flat pancake configuration will fit in a Speedster (and can use a thermostat) - but once you get to a high power modified engine you will want increased cooling (Raby DTM or Joe Cali upright conversion at least).  The Joe Cali conversion uses T1 and T4 cooling tines with a T1 shroud. An exhaust will be costly.  On less modified engine 411/412 or bus heater boxes can be used.
