I was over at Chico's Performance just hanging out while he unwrapped a set of fiberglass shrouds from Germany that fit a type 4 engine to convert it to a type 3.

An alternator bracket is necessary as well. This engine will get the Holly fuel injection system so he has to fabricate a set of tubes that get him from the type 4 intake ports to the center mounted Holly two barrel throttle body. The throttle body highly resembles the old Holly two barrel carb but looks to be machined from billet aluminum. A very simple looking system !

This engine is going in a bus or a Ghia.........Bruce

somewhere in my garage is a Type 4 case that I adapted to take a type 1 generator stand ,

There was also a one piece fiberglass shroud and cylinder covers back in the 1970s-80s

Running a type 4 based motor in a bug was very popular in Europe with all kinds of cooling ideas including a Corvair style flat fan !

I should add that a Type 3 VW motor out of a Squareback etc was a stock 1600cc motor with a cooling fan mounted directly to the crankshaft ,

the regular 1600 based bug motor with an upright fan housing would be a Type 1 .

Also Type 4 motors out of a 411-412 VW , 914 , and later VW bus also had a cooling fan mounted on the crankshaft ,

Yes, your pictures show a type 4 to type 1 conversion.
