Vintage Speed Replica Stainless Steel Exhaust  155-204-05200

I just installed the above mentioned exhaust and am extremely pleased with it.  It has a deeper pitched sound, quieter than my Tri-Mil exhaust was.  To my ears sounds more like Porsche tone than a VW.. I ordered it directly from Vintage Speed in Taiwan and had it in hand within 7 days! It looks great and is constructed beautifully with some nice welds. Everything needed to install it was included and was a perfect fit with my stock heater boxes (NO modifications). I haven’t been able to get out and really road test it yet, but I definitely like what I hear so far!

I also installed their Quick Shifter Replica Shifter and I love it as well. Actually both of these upgrades have been the most painless and rewarding to date.

Big Shout Out to LFEPARDO (Luis) for taking the time to share his experience with them.

Vintage Speed in Taiwan, not to be confused with Vintage Speesters offers VW parts and has few items designed for our Speedster replicas.

Thought I would pass this a long in case in anyone else is on the fence about their products.

I'm a huge fan of their products. I have one of their vintage speed shifters (just ordered another one for the Berg5). Very high quality stuff. I've considered selling the A1 on my car and going with their Sebring or merged header systems.   Anyone have any experience them?

The only issue I have with the A1 is that the header hangs too low and I hit it nearly every time I pull into my driveway. I'm afraid the Sebring would suffer the same fate.

I am considering a Vintage Speed stainless exhaust when I get to that point on my build. I have contacted Vintage Speed to inquire about relocating the exhaust tips to the center of the muffler, side by side.  I want more of an outlaw look

I received a response from "MT" saying that the special request was not a problem and they could accommodate for an additional 100USD and 4 weeks lead time.  I really like this option.

If it sounds and looks as good as yours, I will be very happy!

I know that they are happy to customize their mufflers to customer specs. I read about quite a few examples while I was researching them. I know that MT Lee (who I believe is the owner) was alway quick to respond to all my pre-purchase questions.

Good luck with the build.... I look forward to seeing some pictures!

What the, I've had that exhaust on a two liter mild stroker for about two years now.

I wanted something that sounded more stock than an A1, without the Sousaphone of pipes underneath and that's pretty much what I got. A lot of folks remind me that I gave up some ponies compared to a merged header system, but I don't care about that too much.

I think it does sound something like a stock 356, maybe a bit deeper and a little louder.

Here's a video of a short drive I did on some twisties. The sound is recorded by the camera, near the passenger seat, so captures pretty much what you hear while driving. It would be a little louder to someone watching the car pass by.

Ted, You may have an A-1 built for a bug and not a speedster. You can't see the pipes or muffler in mine. What I don't like is the muffler bowing all the road dust and dirt up into my underside...

I have a build thread on the site.  Slow progress and I'm not really good at documenting all the details.  But I'm getting close to driving!

I have seen that thread, You have some talent my friend.. Excellent color choice, wide 5's and bee hives too! You're going to get a lot of thumbs up  in that car!

Mitch, that is a nice sounding ride.. I look forward to getting mine out on the road, its just too hot in the desert to enjoy it.. 124 degrees a couple weeks ago!!

I've been talking to him about it.

$1000.00 is a lot of scratch when I'm still waiting for my 5 speed bill to be due.

I'm honestly afraid it will be too loud and hang too low. I'd love to hear a video of it. It's supposed to hang no lower than their vintage speed exhaust and be 91db at 4k.

Michael, my engine is 2024cc.  It's a 2110 with a slightly shorter stroke (78.8 instead of 82), but with the same 90.5 bore.

Vintage Speed makes two versions of this exhaust - a 'normal' and a 'free flow' for larger engines. We went with the free flow to be on the safe side. It's 1.5" tubing, and I'm using it with heater boxes.

Here's their web site.

You can contact them direct or order their stuff through Aircooled.net (where I was able to order the correct heater boxes at the same time as the exhaust). It might take an extra week ordering through Aircooled, though. Vintage is usually quick to respond and ship on their own.

good luck with the "correct" heater boxes...

ask me why...

on second thought, please don't!

Sorry you had problems, Will.

As I recall, the 'big bore' (1.5") heater boxes from Aircooled have flanges aligned for a Bugpack exhaust. They used to post a warning that for any other system, the flanges had to be cut and rewelded in the correct orientation.

Now I see that warning is gone and they just say the boxes are for use with the Bugpack, period.

I guess nothing on these cars is plug and play.

If you order straight from Vintage, they will customize to your spec/heater boxes, typically at no additional cost, but a week or two of lead time to ship.

Years back I was the first to order their shifter in a 10.5" lenth, painted silver, with a 12Mx1.5 thread to use with P car knob... He didn't  charge me extra, now he stocks this part...  Their support is awesome.  Since I have ordered several custom shifters and exhaust, For both my plastic and steel 356 projects.

Thank Mitch for the info. I'm only running the 1600cc with a mild cam upgrade from Kirk. Sure love the Sebring but some folks say they can be louder than the A-1 by Tiger. I'm sure I'll gain some horse with the Sebring over the Tri-Mill currently mounted on my engine. I do worry the sound maybe far more than the Tri-Mil which is cool for a short while but can be too much for long drives.

Michael, you'll probably gets lots of opinions on this, but I wouldn't spend much on trying to upgrade the performance of the basic 1600 motor - certainly not the cost of a high-quality exhaust.

If you're unhappy with the power (and torque) you've got now, maybe save your pennies for a larger, custom-built motor. The stuff that does make a difference on any motor - better crank, cam, heads, carbs, and exhaust, etc. - is expensive and, within limits, costs about the same on a two-liter engine as on a 1600. So, once you go looking for more grunt, it doesn't make a lot of sense to limit yourself to 1600cc's.

I'm not one of the resident engine gurus, but I'm sure they'll be along anon.
