Vintage Voltage

I watched a new show on the Motor Trend Channel, the old Velocity Channel, called Vintage Voltage.This is the only episode I've seen so I don't know if it features different shops or just this one in Wales England. It was Season One Episode 2 and it featured the conversion of a Chesil Speedster to an all electric car.

They introduced a man named Frank and it was said that he just bought Chesil and will combine it with his current company Westfield Sportscars Ltd. and they will build Chesil Speedsters with ICE and EV. Frank delivered a previously built Chesil to the shop and had them convert it to an an electric vehicle. The conversion added significant weight to the front and rear of the Chesil which they balanced out so it would be more of a mid-engine weigth distribution. The conversion took up all of the space in the frunk and the luggage shelf behind the driver and passenger. Not sure how much it impeded the folding top but it looked to me like it did a bit. Interesting note, the Chesil has an articulated top just like the original car and the MOT requires windshield washer sprayers so the fluid reservoir had to be relocated as well.

Anyway, Season 1 Episode 2 Vintage Voltage on Motor Trend Channel.

I could see an electric car in many places (UK, PR, Hawaii, Caribean).  My thinking is there isn't that far to go and not at high speeds plus gas is costly.  Not so much a hybrid.  It's just that it adds so much weight it isn't a fun car to drive anymore.  I'll have to check the show out - assume the ICE is used to charge the batteries vs drive the wheels?

I was actually appalled when Prince Harry and what's her name left the wedding in an electric XKE.  That Jaguar 6 cylinder is such a beautiful engine - what a shame!

Yeah, but that's not how they produce any real power.

I also live on an Island, we probably produce about the same renewable energy.  The only really cost effective use of solar is to make hot water.  I've had solar pool heating for 20 years, works great.  If it weren't for the solar industry  government rebates, no one would put solar on their roof.

I watched that as well. Pretty interesting episode.
