Recently took delivery on my vintage motor cars 356 speedster. Having an interesting problem. The engine lid unlatches and opens easily when the car is cold. After driving the car, and when the engine bay is hot, the lid will not open (even with somebody holding the release open while I pull on the grill).  Once the temps cool down the latch and lid open easily again. Greg claims he’s never seen this problem before. Wanted to check with other members to see if anyone had a similar issue or knows of a workaround?

Greg recommended white lithium grease on the latch and pin, which I tried a couple of weeks ago and it did not help. He is now suggesting that I put some lubricant or wax on the rubber bump stops as maybe they are heating up and making contact?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you open the hood and take a picture of both the latch on the body and the pin on the cover?  Just want to see what we're dealing with.

Questions:

  1. When it's hot, does the release knob pull all the way out the same as when it's cold or does the knob not move much until everything cools off?
  2. When it's hot, have you tried pushing down on the cover at the back (over the latch) while someone pulls the release knob?  The thinking here is that the cover is too tight against the cushion buttons on the sides and the latch is too tight against the pin of the cover, preventing it from releasing.  Pushing down on the rear of the cover releases the tension to let the latch work.
  3. Have you tried shortening the release cable at the latch end?  It might be that the latch isn't fully pulling the latch release lever enough to let the cover pin go.  It might be close, but needs a little adjustment at the latch end by loosening the cable clamp, pulling a little out past the clamp and re-tightening.

I doubt that the cable has stretched in a week or so, but, as Wolfgang mentioned,  maybe the cable clamp on the latch wasn't tight enough when shipped and the cable has slipped a little so the latch isn't fully releasing - Worth checking.

Keep us posted on what you find.
