I have a VS 1776cc motor with a 34pict single. Would like to move to dual carbs, but the car has the compressor installed and it appears to be "in the way". Not a big A/C fan, but I see no reason to pull out all the hardware. Anyone know what carbs fit and would be good for my application? How about a two-barrel single? Appears like it would interfere with the hood. Thanks

I am very pleased w/the dual Kadron setup. I see that there is now a version w/electric chokes. It was a simple install and the instructions made the initial setup very easy. I had a set of Webers on the car when I got it and the car had a HUGE flat spot off idle. A friend highly recommended the Kadrons for either the 1600cc or 1776cc motors. The car runs much better now. I have no complaints, but I understand that some people do not like the standard linkage that comes w/the kit. I think that I paid a bit over $300 for the complete kit

Charles,
Do you have A/C with your setup? My configuration was like Stephen's but I pulled the A/C out, as I felt it was useless, made the engine harder to work on (eg. getting to #3 & #4 plugs or the distributor) and added extra weight. I wonder if a Weber progressive would fit under the hood with his current setup. I thought about adding dual carbs to my current engine but I'm not sure that I want to put any money into an engine if my long term goal is to replace it.

First, yes the dual Kads will fit with your a/c if it is the set up from VS. But, you'll need to get a different set of brackets from Kirk to set the a/c in a position that doesn't get in the way of the drivers side carb and linkage.

Second. You might consider removing the a/c. I had it on my car at delievry and it worked great. But, I simply never used it. Hot/Warm? Top Down. Cool? Top up. No a/c needed. It weighs boo-coo, and as John H said, it is a real sob to deal with when geting to the left side plugs or carb, and makes changing points a miserable job (if you don't have a Comp-u-fire, et al). Sell it and take the $1000 and put it into better stuff.

Third. Someone asked about where to get Kads? The very best guy in the world to get Kads set up for your car is AJ Smith. He charges around $360+ for a set... but they are jetted and squirt set for your app. Plus the intakes are polished and the linkage is all set up. I would go with a Berg linkage though, even though the Scat is also an excellent Kad linkage. As far as chokes? I thought those new ones were 34s.... am I wrong? I live in an area that gets pretty cold and haven't run into a need for chokes, FWIW.

Fourth. I just went from baby Webers (34ICTs) to a pair of 40IDFs, and the difference is phenonemal. It took a few days to find that sweet spot on them, but now they seem to be set perfect. Kads are good carbs, but can be a little testy getting set up right... but I think on a 1776 that is built (not a mexican crate engine, they will be a real plus in performance. The 34ICTs work good, and are probably great on stocker 1600-1776s, but if you have a cam, headwork, bigger valves etc, they just aren't quite the ticket. That's been my experience anyway. John Connely recommends going to 44s, and just going smaller with the internals. If I ever get my hands on a pair through horse trading I'll get them.

I just sold a pair of AJs Kads to a forum member. They were new, except I ran them on a bench engine for 30 minutes. They really ran sweet, and if I had not fell into a great deal on these 40IDFs I would be running the Kads on my car today!

Aloha,

K-Dogs are just about the best carbs you can get for a stock engine or mild increase in displacement (1776). I had them on my 1500SP, with a street header, turbo exhaust and 009 and my 1/4 time went from 21.3 to 18.3. Pretty good return on investment. I bought them from Dave at Proformance in Orange, CA. Of course, if I had a DP motor, I would go with the AJ Simms prepped carbs. He even has a modification process to make those little K-duds compete with 2bbl Webers! Check out his 46 IDK, as he calls them.

I would avoid a progressive Weber carb for your application. Unless, you're running a cam that belongs in a Baja 1000 car. Progressives are a real b*tch to tune on street cars. You might get it close, but it will never be spot-on. Plus, its ugly.

As for the flat spot...that's your 009 dizzy. Not the carbs. Step-up to a Mallory dizzy and the flat spot disappears along with a few Ben Franklins.

About the A/C, apparently you can get the brackets to remount it from VS, however, like some of the other guys said, its a real PITA to get at things that need to be gotten at with a condenser in the way. In my Bug, its already a contortion act to get the #3 spark plug...I can only imagine how frustrating it will be in a Speedster with dual carbs AND A/C.

aloha,
Joel

PS - I'm assuming you're running stock heads as you have a 34PICT on a 1776 mill. If so, Kadrons are your winner. They will also give you room to expand all the way up to 2 liters (just ask AJ Simms).

Jim,
Glad your happy with the IDFs. Did you like the Kads better than the ICTs then? I had dual 40 IDFs on the first car, and they were a pain to set-up, and I never approached the milage George tells us to expect. The ICTs work well, but they seem to limit performance on a mildly built 1776 (110 cam, etc.). I like the gas milage with the smaller carbs, but jet availability (at least here) is non-existent. I never considered Kads until I read the AJ Simms write-up several issues ago in HotVWs. By the way, email me off-forum about your CB air cleaners and linkage.

I hated my 40 Webers until I found someone who showed me how to set up the carbs properly. No more hesitation. No more flat spots. No more surging. I do hate the idle jets...so darn small that ANY piece of crap will plug them. Never had that happen with K-Dogs (ran them on a beetle for 60k). My 40's had fairly small ventures (28, while my newly purchased 44's have 38 mm ventures...what a difference in power!
