When I bought my used McSpeedster it had a new dp 1600 with single carb. In the city limits it ran okay, kinda perky, but on the open road and especially in the foothills near me I found I would have to downshift on some inclines. Good grief... it didn't have any torque. Frankly it bugged the hell out of me. I added dual Kardons & ratio rockers plus a lightened flywheel. That helped, but still left me wanting more. If I lived in the city a modest engine would possibly be okay, but living in the country I need some get-up-and-go for highway speeds.
This is in no way a scientific comparision, but it seems to be about the same power as my last car which was a 1776 single carb. The only major difference is the transmission, this car has the 3:44 upgraded transmission which really helps at highway speeds. At 70mph it's only running 3000rpm, with plenty of room to go.

I could cruise at 70 with the 1600 plus bolt-ons, however, even with a gentle rise in the road I would find myself with the pedal to the floor just to maintain 70 mph. Sigh.

I guess for guys that will mainly be motoring around town a stock-ish engine is okay, that's cool. If you want more performance you ought to consider bigger/better, but of course I don't need nor can I afford maxium HP in today's economy. My goal is an honest 120 to 140 HP, but with brakes and suspension upgrades capable of handling more.

One more opinion, haha. Looking at the listed options on the VS Sponsored car, I think this may be a pretty sweet deal.

It's loaded with many of the "musts" and definitely is a bargain for a turnkey car of this option level. Those options cost some big bucks and the two + grand saved could be put in the piggy bank to start a build on another engine, IF the buyer wasn't totally satisfied with that 1641.

My advice to someone considering this car, is to go drive it. That 1641 may just suit your needs to a T, espcially with the Dual Kadrons and exhaust set up. You could do a couple hundred in small upgrades to pour on a few HP, like 1:25 ratio rockers, and a Compufire ignition. This would make it a pretty snappy runner, with minimal investment. Coupled with that 3:88 R&P, this car should do just fine...

Drive the car for a year, evaluate what your needs are. Is the power enough? Would you like just a bit more without breaking the bank? Buy a CB or SCAT 1776 kit for the car, use the same case, carbs, ignition, and all.... and get a 20-30 HP jump with a cam and 1.5" exhaust. Cost? Not much if you pull the engine (piece o cake) and haul it to a good VW guy in your area that builds engines.

If you end up with a real need for speed, save $100 per month into your piggy bank, add that to the $2500 you saved on initial purchase, and get Pat Downs to build you a 2007 or 2100 from CB Perf. You'll end up with a $26,000 car with only $22,000 in it. Not bad. Plus you'll have a spare engine sitting in the garage... always a nice thing witth Type 1s.

I really like the idea of this car sponsor thing. If the colors suit the buyer, then this is a heck of a deal IMO.

Jim,I love the color combonation,it looks very classy.I have a 2000 boxster S that I am selling and love the power of the car.I know the speedster is not that kind of car , but I could use a little more pep than the 1600cc. I see thet JPS offers a 2110cc engine in a almost loaded car,disc brakes, wider tires,leather, stereo, ect, for $23900.I will probably go in that direction because in Buffalo N.Y.( where I live)you don't find trick VW mechanics. I'd like the power out of the box,no tinkering.

Be aware that all the manufacturers will build you a car with your choice of options. Plus add tax. If you are thinking of going for something that performs like your boxster S and have the budget of around 30k, take a look at the Intermecannica speedster with a heavily optioned engine.

Not to dispute you Theron... I agree, the IM Speedster os a very nice car. But cost? You are a wee bit off there. I priced with Frank a nicely equipped IM Speedster with not all the options I wanted, and a mid level engine. Price? 35-36 Gs, 18 months ago, with a 5-9 month waiting list.

John Leader had a nice Boxster and now drives a beautiful JPS with a 1776,,,,,, and seems pretty tickled with it. I agree though, a VS or JPS will never equal a Boxster in comfort or practicality.

I also priced an IM about 18 months ago, and also ended up with a 1776 JPS, which I love. I thought at the time, and still think, that John's cars are the best value for my hard-earned money. However, the car in question here (the site car) is a SCREAMING deal, and should benefit the site. Kudos to Kirk for making it available- at a discount no less. I would encourage anyone out west (or east for that matter) in the market to give this car a close look.
If you think IM's are expensive for Americans, you'd really be floored by the cost in Canadian dollars. With a few extras, such as a 2110, leather, seat heaters etc., its easy to top 50k. Unlike car manufacturers who sell their cars for less in the Canadian market, Henry can't afford to do that. The fellow who built our log home gets most of his orders from USA and Japan. He seldom gets any orders from Canada.
I remember, back in 1974 when the American buck was only worth around 94 cents Canadian. That was also around the time of your gas shortage...which, for some strange reason, we never experienced.
