Hi,

Following up from my post “Coming to the U.S. Part II” in the General (Non-Technical) section, I am bringing my family back over to the U.S. for another holiday in Sept/Oct this year and this time I come with intent, now having a green light to buy a speedster.

As you may have seen in posts from Aussies previously, the speedster needs to have been constructed pre-1989 to meet Australia’s import and registration rules. Unless one of the very first Vintage Speedsters pop up for sale, I am limited to:

  • an early pan-based IM speedster (built in Santa Ana)
  • CMC speedster (with proof of construction pre-1989)
  • very early Canadian IM speedster

I’m going down the import route as speedster replicas are relatively few and far-between here in Australia.

I am hoping to have the opportunity to look at any available speedsters while visiting. If there is anyone out there with a speedster of the right age considering selling in the coming months, or if anyone comes across one for sale, I would very grateful for a heads-up.

I have already received links that I am pursuing (thanks gents) and generous offers of help from SOC members (this forum is awesome!) but any other leads, etc will be gratefully accepted.

Many thanks for your help.

Kindest regards,

Tony

NOT MINE.  How about a raw unbuilt kit?  Here's one on SAMBA.  You make it a car once it gets to Australia.  Could even convert to right hand drive easily.  In Phoenix AZ. Appears to be CMC/FF. $4400 - appears to need windshield glass $400. Add a Subbie engine.

Are you sure that's not yours? They're in about the same stage of construction aren't they? I kid, I kid!!

Ha - mines black and in FL (last I checked -2 months ago) ---- I am a bit ahead of that one (stalled at 97%).  Just curious if it might be easier to import car parts and avoid the assembled car bit.  The title missing could force getting a new titled VW pan or maybe the car seised? Seems no engine would make it easier.  From experience, buying parts is not for the faint of heart.  Kudos go to DrClock for his stick-to-it attitude and expertise!

If its missing many parts - they would be costly to ship separately to Australia.  So maybe store it here till all parts are obtained and included.

Awotton,

  Are you still coming to the states?  Are you still looking for a speedster?  I have one that was built in 1987.  It's red with tan interior.  Let me know if you've already found yours of if you would be interested in this one?

Thanks @Robert M

Hi @Brendan,

Thanks for your post. Sorry it took a few days to stop and reply.

Yes, we are still coming to the states. We fly out two weeks from yesterday and really looking forward to the break...but work is getting nuts at the moment!!

I have been conversing with a guy from San Francisco regarding his older IM and will continue that 'conversation' but no deal has been finalised as yet.

That said, I am certainly interested in knowing more about your speedster and any photos you may be able to send through. I am still open to consider any options. The biggie for me (and sometimes difficult to demonstrate) is being able prove date of construction to our Australian import authority. Any paperwork or DMV plates/stickers on the vehicle are pretty important.

I've sent you a PM (private message).

Again, thanks for posting.

Kind Regards,

Tony

@WOLFGANG

Wow , as much as I sooo want a speedster, I don't think I have the cojones to take on that project!!

Thanks for thinking of me!

I may have one for your consideration.  Mid 80's original CMC build with nearly all original build receipts and invoice from CMC   just completed an interior refresh with all new vinyl for dash, doors, and seats. New front calipers and MC .  New carb, starter, and refreshed ignition system.  White exterior, black interior on red carpet   Great condition and great running car.  I'm located in Central Kentucky.  20180913_22304920180819_190709

@awotton

My CMC purchased in Nov 1988 is on a 1971 VW IRS pan - but never registered for road.  Have 1988  CMC Certificate of Origin and FL VW title (in father-in-laws name).  Have all receipts from CMC including pages of computer print out of parts and shipping receipt.  Does the fact that it was never titled as a replica care eliminate it?  I was simply going to title is as a '71 VW (ok orange 2 sedan is kind of bogus)>
