Hi:

Thank-you. Yes, I looked into having one built. SAS in Tenn makes a very nice one on a square welded frame with Subie components but the wait time is over 2 years. JPS in Calf makes a very nice one on a VW pan with VW components and the wait time is about a year. I also feel they are a little expensive ($40K +) for what you are getting.

Do a little research here - SAS wait time is forever or a lifetime which ever comes first.  DO NOT send any money to SAS!  They have a backlog of probably 20 cars with some owners waiting over 10 years.  None have been delivered in last few years!  Numerous complaints and law suits.  Use the spy glass symbol at top of screen to right.

Beck SE (Indiana) started making them too but are sold out for 2020.  But with Covid-19 - I'd check with Carey Hines to see if perhaps there is a cancellation. You are going to pay $40k+.  In Miami you will probably need AC so that really means a Subaru engine.

Lane A. has one being built - a bright blue beauty.

It gets really expensive when you realize after handing him the first 2 payments (some $17,000) that 'your' car will never happen! Search the numerous threads on this guy- these days his business is conning deposits out of people. He must be one heck of a talker, as he has people he's taken money from waiting 9 or 10 years now, still convinced he will build them a car. 3 or 4 former customers have come on here and documented efforts to get deposits back (with varying results) when it became obvious deadlines hadn't been (and would never be) met. There hasn't been a report of a finished car out of the SAS (or whatever he calls himself now) shop for 4? 5? years.

ANYONE thinking about having a car built by SAS from TENNESSEE- re-read Wolfgang's post above, search here for previous posts about the lying, frustration and disappointment that will happen dealing with Steve Lawing and above all, don't send him any money!!!

You've got three choices for made-to-order, Joel.

Vintage Motorcars in Hawaiian Gardens, CA makes a pre-A bent-window coupe on a VW pan.

JPS Motorsports makes an A coupe on a pan.

Beck/Special Edition in Indiana makes a C coupe on a proprietary frame, and is mid-engine for now, rear engine subframe isn't done yet AFAIK.

All are available with Subaru power, and A/C. The first two use an aftermarket EFI while Beck/SE uses a factory ECU(and I believe the mid-engine cars all have a Suby 5 speed also).

You'll notice I made no mention of SAS. Steve Lawing has no morals and should be beaten. He is a con artist, a grifter. STAY AWAY or you'll just end up lighter in the wallet!

Joel---as you may know by now the wait time is not two years.  It is more like forever.

Do your research here.

OK I appreciate all the impute and information.

I will stay away from SAS.

I do not like the looks of the Pre-A Coupes. I like the A or newer coupes. But I want an Outlaw style, so I am not sure it matters that much whether you start with an A, B or C.

Are there any custom shops building one off cars with a tube frame? I would love an Outlaw car with a set of Fuchs, racing style mirrors, a louvered deck lid, bee hive tail lights, single center outlet exhaust, no bumpers, front driving lights, leather hood straps, headlight stone guards, center mount fuel cap, 4 wheel discs, a 2332CC motor with twin 44 IDF's and a 4 speed. Stone Gray with a Red leather interior.

Put a 5 speed on your wish list. You'll thank me later.

Hello, Joel Roth

I had to make repairs to a SAS car that was fresh out of their shop, and that had a horrible story. I would not recommend them to anyone.

That being said I noticed your statement about $40K plus being expensive. Let me give you a little in site on cost to build a car here on the west cost new.

Build would be an Speedster with a 2110cc engine 4 speed built trans, and a Mendeola chassis with CoolStop Disc brakes. This is a mid to upper level performance build.

All new engine 2110cc turnkey......................$9500

Pro-street 4 speed trans.................................$1500  add $3000 for a entry level 5 sp

Mendeola front & rear suspension kits........$5700

CoolStop brakes 4 piston four wheel brakes....$2700

Donor car for pan and paperwork......................$2000

Cost to build chassis into roller state.................$4000

Basic wheel package.............................................$1500

Body kit assembled not painted..........................$5000

Paint and body......................................................$8000

Interior basic w/gauges, Nardi steering wheel...$5000

Wiring harness, lights and switches.....................$1000

Glass windshield and top......................................$1100

Finish wiring and assembly of vehicle.................$6000

Total of above........................$53,000 add $3k- 8k for five speed transaxle.

For less power and drive ability you can opt. for a 1600cc and basic suspension and brakes. If so you can most likely get it done for .......$36-$40k on the west coast.

If you want to go Subaru powered final price will be slightly higher.

You'll notice this is a basic estimate just off the top of my head and I'm sure I have forgotten something.  Building any car is not easy on the pocket book, however in the end you get what you dreamed of, and not someone else's dream.

So buying used will save you a lot of money if you can drive someone else's dream. If you chose to buy used, do yourself a valuable thing and have ANY car checked out by a third party professional to make sure it is a good investment. I have seen some cars that should not be on the road due to safety issues, and poor workmanship. Some of these cars came from people who the buyer personally knew. Money makes people do bad things, otherwise known as the root of all evil.

If you need any help you can always reach my through my website via email. www.CoolRydesCustoms.com

When I said $40K + I was really thinking $50K +.

$40K being the low end if your were able to do everything on the cheap.

I know these cars are expensive. Which has caused me to stop and think if it is really worth it? I am asking myself what am I getting for my $50k+? Would I be better off buying a "real" Porsche, say a 2003-5 911 Turbo?

@RacerX   you are correct sir!....early 70's as well late model 2000's water pumper PORSCHE's can be crap shoots & or serious money pits when things go seriously south....an old adage is "let the buyer beware".....kinda like HARLEYS...H/D stands for "Hundreds of Dollars" (also "hair dryer)  & BMW which stands for "Bring Money With"....which makes our very neat replicas a real bargain...relatively speaking....and that's my 2 cents

I have been in and around Porsche vehicles for more then 30 years. I have owned new and old. I will say this to you, they are a great car and feel like no others. That being said, there is nothing like owning older ones, or at least ones that look like them. I have found the balance in my life with a Speedster kit car that can out handle and out perform any new Porsche. With my suspension, I can out corner, with my brakes and light weight care I can out stop them, and with 306hp at the wheels being feed through a 911 Porsche 5 speed trans, I can out accelerate and out run them. Plus people look at my car and smile, give thumbs up, and enjoy it. While when I owned late model Porsches, people turned their heads away because of the type of person they thought I must be.     Early Porsche's are not a car, or a vehicle, they are a feeling and life style choice....

@Joel Roth Joel this was my debate. I have a Cayenne turbo for daily. I wanted a cayman due to rating etc  what I did not expect was the amount of attention this cars generate  lots of thumbs up and videos taken  just amazing

My wife has little interest in cars but she like driving this one  ☝️ helps me cause lol

Subie motor is a good suggestion if you do get one

I think we can all tell sad stories about SAS. So I will save my grim tale for another time.

There is a coupe in Atlanta. (Not mine. Have not seen it.)
http://cloud9classics.com/1959...coupe-replica-44500/

I have gone to some effort to look at a couple of coupes and came home with the money in my pocket.
IMHO do not trust photos or words floating in thin air. This is real money and go look at the car you are considering.

Unlike major productions, these cars can vary enormously in quality, fit, and finish.
The best would certainly be Beck or Vintage Motorcar.

Even so put eyeballs on it and thank me later.  :-)
Good luck.

I doubt that car is still available, he doesn’t keep up with his website inventory.
