I am considering replacing my Weber idf40 carbs but not sure regarding whether the idf40 or idf44 is best  for my situation. I have just about tried every solution to get a smooth idle and eliminate my problem of rpms not dropping   back to idle speed. I know the engine has a hotter cam . I am open for suggestions. I appreciate very much all the suggestions this forum provides me and value the input is the only place I can get trusted advice.

What were the "every solution"?

Did you clean the idle circuit first?

If that didn't work, did you follow the instructions on that 2nd link that I gave you on your other thread?

If you get new carbs, you'll have to do all of what's on the 2nd link to set them up. You might as well try that with the carbs you have first. New carbs do not come set up out of the box.

I had to do that setup to my carbs when I got my car, as most everyone on this forum.

We're just trying to help, not putting you down.

Did you remove the 1/2 manifold and check the gasket? Have you taken the carb off the manifold and removed the top?

There's a lot to do between "just about" and "I have tried everything".

FWIW, 40 or 44, you're going to have to learn how to do this stuff. I had a set of 40s on my first speedster (20 years ago) that kicked my butt, and several that nearly have since. There's no magic carburetor that's going to provide snappy performance without a steep learning curve. If you stick with it, you will learn. It's just not the nature of these things to give you anything for free.

You had a new cam put in the motor, correct @Renfrance?

Removing carbs from the motor REQUIRES them to be disassembled and checked over in my opinion. This is good advice, ask anyone here about me and Webers. We get along fine, Webers and I.

They may not need any parts, but disassembly sometimes damages gaskets and O-rings. So it's a GREAT idea to have rebuild kits in hand.

My rule on carbs: 2000cc and under, 40 IDF. Over 2000cc, 44IDF.

Start with the article "Setting Up IDFs":

Since you're in Europe, I'll not even attempt to help you find a vendor. Get in touch with some VW clubs in your area or google it.

I'm not picking on you, but saying it "has a hotter cam" doesn't really mean anything. We need more information to help you: exactly what "hotter cam", heads(valve size, porting), compression ratio, displacement(bore and stroke), and what exhaust system.

Without this info, nobody in the world can help you.

HA! I assumed you were in France. My bad.

1983, huh? It's probably no bigger than a 2110, most probably an 1835 or so. Not a lot of strokers built back then, but I could be wrong. Only way to know for sure is to pull a head, measure cylinder diameter and stroke.

Redline Weber, CB Performance, and aircooled.net are good sources.
