Ryan in NorCal posted:

Kevin, would you mind sharing a closeup of installation? Blade up and down?

So I completely ignored your request Ryan. For two reasons. One, @*LongFella had photos above. (And, frankly, between my work and his, I’d go with his all day).

The second reason was, given the bar this group has created, I was embarrassed to show close ups. When I painted my VW wiper arms and blades, I removed the cone grommets and painted them the same silver. When I was attempting to remove the VW wiper arms last week, I chipped the paint on the cone grommet. Therefore I waited until the new cone grommets arrived before I snapped photos.

I did take the Speedster up to Napa today, and the wiper arms did not come loose at 80mph.

***PLEASE NOTE, and this is huge*****

for all those going from VW wiper arms to original style wiper arms please be careful the first time you open your frunk. The original style wiper arms stick out further than the VW ones. You will hit them.

@Kevin - Bay Area Initially I thought yours looked a little lower than mine as well but now that I'm at my MAC looking at large photos instead of my phone, it looks like yours are sitting at about the same height as mine. I originally posted that I thought mine seemed to be a little proud of the hood but they're the same.

The new wipers definitely sit higher. I suppose there are two options. Lower the height of the wiper stud or drill a hole in the attachment point and see if the stud will sit in the recess.

Before I cut the spindle or drill out the back of the attachment point doers anyone have any other suggestions.

@TRP How are yours sitting and what did you do????

So after I got back from my drive yesterday I took a few minutes to look at the new wiper assembly. I couldn't drill a hole in the attachment arm because there wasn't any space above the attachment arm where the top of the spindle would sit. Once the wiper arm is pushed forward so the blade rests on the window the top of the attachment arm is resting against the bottom of the wiper arm cover.

So the next option was to re-profile the spindle. I used a grinder to grind down the spindle shorter. I fit the wiper arm onto the spindle but it still wasn't low enough. The bottom of the attachment arm was now hitting the top of the splined portion of the spindle and that is tapered. I didn't want to enlarge the hole in the attachment arm so I got my Dremel and small grinding wheel so i could reshape the splined part.

I found it best to attach the small grinding wheel with the abrasive face of the wheel facing back toward the Dremel. I reshaped the flared spindle and reattached the wipers. They sit much lower now and the open trunk clears with plenty of room.

I’ve looked at numerous photos of Speedsters as it relates to wipers. For one, our VW setup will never be an exact match if that’s the goal. They are different. That said, in every photo I’ve seen, there’s definitely a distance where the spindle is seen.  I’ve also seen a variety of wiper blade placements as it relates to its resting position on the windscreen. Some are angled on the windscreen, some rest flush against the rubber seal at the bottom, and even one where it was located off the glass below the rubber seal.

Seeing the spindle doesn’t bother me, personally. I just enjoy the Porsche wiper arm over the black VW arm.  I guess it becomes a “pick your battles” scenario.

As it relates to the install, as with everything I have purchased for this car, nothing has ever been a simple plug and play for me. Even the simple rubber gaskets around the horn grills. I had to drill my own holes in the gasket. As the holes that came pre drilled (on the gasket) were at the 6/12 position and my holes are at the 3/9 position.
