My younger son has decided to drop out of college and now is need of cheap, reliable transportation so that he can get a job. Would prefer state of Michigan.

Even as depressed as Michigan is you can probably get a decent Honda Civic for less.
Why would he want to drop out? There's no work. Might as well stay in and make himself more employable when the economy comes back. Where was he going to school?
Uncle Sam has a seat in a HUMVV, MRAP or Bradley fighting vehicle. Up to a $25k enlistment bonus too. Like other poster said no jobs and he'll need specialized training to compete in today's world. I sure wouldn't reward his dropping out by providing a vehicle with no strings attached - no buses in Michigan? Hopefully economy will improve in 3 years - he might find he enjoys the military too. Hooah!
Guys. You're preaching to the choir regarding college. He had a free ride at Central Michigan University paid by dear old dad, but is walking away from it after 3 semesters The car will be a loan. IF he decides to go back to school someday, I will pay for tuition, but no more room and board. I'm going to help him make the transition to the "real" world so that he can grow up a little and find his direction. I would be very happy with a military decision. He's spending next week at my house with his step mom getting her version of boot camp looking for a job, including visiting the recruiters. I imagine the military might look pretty good by the end of the week :) Definitely, not looking for a Speedster, just cheap transportation.
Tom re: sons dropout - I did that after 2 years of college. Worked as machinist for a few years. Discovered what it really took to earn a living. Went back to school via General Motors. Graduated and drew some of the lines on the original Camaro and other "Bodies by Fisher". Keep the faith.

Sorry for the drop out but it might just be best. In the 60's and 70's a BA was only had by about 45% of the workforce and it was truly something special. Today it is over 70% so it has become a bit watered down. To make yourself be special you need a masters degree in your field and that will still NOT get you a job.
For example my youngest daughter (26) is over $70K in debt with college loans over and above the $60K her mother and me kicked in and has a 2008 Degree in Environmental Design from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a job at Wal-Mart as a stock clerk making $10 per hour and living back at home with me. Mind you she has been there a year now and is full time with benefits thank god. My eldest daughter 19 months older dropped out of college got into drugs, bad relationships and her mother and I after about three years of crap said the tough love good-by.
My eldest cleand up her act by herself now has a job as a Workmans Comp claim handler for a very large firm bringing in over $60K a year. She found a great guy and is married just over 5 years now. My grand daughter will be five the 29th and my grandson just turned two.
In the grand scheme of things is college really the thing that one "must" have to be a success? Not for me I barely graduated high school and through hard work make a six figure income.
As for a car I would find a VW Golf or Jetta 2003 TDI if you can find one. Great cars.........good luck!

enlisting might be a good idea. i would stay away from being a grunt or jarhead and go navy or airforce. i couldnt find my ass with both hands at 19 and did Navy(Nam) got out, got 4yr degree in microbiology/chemistry and have done OK.

Got my college knuckle-head an '04 Ford Focus for less than $4K after his thief-bait Honda was stolen. With only 70K miles on it, it seems to work fine.

Have him go into the health field, no matter what the economy is people always get sick! Go into nursing, yes there are male nurses. I was talking to a nurse at UCSF and she was making $150,000 a year. Kind of crazy, she made more than some of the doctors.
Nursing - he just dropped out of college! Doesn't nursing (RN) take a good 5 years of college? Plus you get to work any of the 24 hours a day plus weekend and holidays. Exposed to every new virus, not to mention the coming of ObamaCare!

I got mine a bicycle School was the other option Graduate and I'll buy him a car.
I also couldn't find my ass with two hands at nineteen. This can be solved by allowing him to live in the REAL world where he pays rent (ya Daddy, you may save it to give him later), groceries and finds a job before he thinks about bus, bike or bummin' a ride. Real world. Let him grow up. I have no experience with Armed Forces but I pursued a trade first, then Paid my way thru college. I had a white collar job for 20 years, then one summer I helped out a fellow tradesman and stayed. Lovin' it. Make his world as real as possible. He'll grow to met the challenge.
Thanks for the advice guys, but I'm really looking for a car :) I intend to make life as real as possible for him, either by working at whatever he can work at and experiencing the consequences or enlisting. They both have merit. He is spending an intense week of boot camp getting ready to interview and interviewing.

If you are looking for 4wd, older pathfinders and jeep cherokees are giveways. On the Cherokee, get the 4.0 only. Accept zero electrical issues. On the pathfinder (cheap first generation) be advised that the clutch is 19 hours of labor to install. Also watch headgaskets and exhaust manifold studs. They are either 100% good or 100% PITA. If it's good now, it's probably going to be good until the truck rots away.
YOu can pick up very good running examples of these with working cold air for $1000 or less. Run them until they drop. Craig's list is your friend. Parts are giveways at u-pull right now as so many of these became cash for clunkers cars.

I have an 88 944 that is for sell. I have been using it as a driver to save the milage on my other stuff. Northern VA. $3500. Nov inspection and everything works except the odometer.
If it is just cheap reliable transportation and nothing else what about a mid 90's Toyota Camry.
Honda Civic..they run nearly forever....

Look for an AMC Pacer, they were so unpopular you should find one with low mailage, hehehehehehe.
