Gordon, I think the linkage movement thing depends on where the "pull" comes from. The more centered your throttle cable, the less side-to-side motion.
A few thousandths of endplay clearance cold is fine, the engine grows a bit when warm increasing clearance.
If I had $30 in my whole setup I'd be surprised.
