I had a Grant GT detachable wheel quite some time back. To detach the wheel you just pulled up on a collar on the hub and the whole thing pulled free from the column, just like the race cars you see today. I had it because the car I drove in college was one of the highest on the theft list and I figured without a steering wheel it would be more difficult to steal.

There are any number of adapters available today to make almost any steering wheel a quick release wheel. https://www.summitracing.com/s...el-quick-disconnects

I use them on our track cars regularly and I prefer the Rennline billet version.  Very user friendly with an asymmetrical attachment point and a solid "click" into place.  Its not quite as practical for street cars (at least the Rennline version) as it makes the turn signal cancel cam and horn clock spring nearly impossible to use.
