That's not rust, it's patina! Well that makes it OK then.
Too bad the dripping sarcastic tone is lost in the typed word.

"Virtually no rust" Everything you need to know. in one descriptive sentence.
Translation: "Almost no rust that you can see on first glance, and a heck of a lot you can't".
This is true for basically all cars. Or, anyway, steel bodied cars.

You’re making my point for me, Ed.
Here is where to buy body panel parts for a Karmann Ghia. https://www.wagner-blechteile.de/index.html
These guys with a Rhode Island address seem to have Ghia patch panels too. I was looking at the headlight surrounds for a neighbor with a smuched Ghia, and also daydreaming about using them to help make an older Beck Spyder look like one of the first dozen (Weinsberg-built) Spyders, with the high rear fenders and the upright headlights.
I don't know that this variation has ever been made as a replica....
Ed, they did a 3.06 cyl Subaru in that car with full Mandeola.... pretty nice. @Rich Drewek
I just did some local research for the cost of restoration of a GHIA and even simple rocker panel replacements is not inexpensive as Alan mentioned.
Still remember when I was in my late teens (back when the earth was still cooling -as many of you can relate) chasing two drunk guys in a Ghia through downtown Boston. They kept driving between the building fronts and phone poles. I can still see it,,,
