Folks,

I'm tossing around the idea of moving on to something else. I've owned 914's for almost 20 years, and need to move into another car. The Speedsters have always had a warm place in my heart, so I'd like to test the waters to see if anyone is open to a trade?

1974 rust free chassis imported from CA about 10 years ago. I bought the car off of a friend of mine after the car had gone through multiple engine conversions. It currently has a 79K mile 1986 Carrera 3.2 powerplant that I installed 2 years ago. Since I have owned the engine, I replaced all of the fuel injection lines, had the injectors cleaned/flow tested, replaced the plugs, replaced the head temp sensor, and installed a CHT into the exhaust. All of these were preventative maintenance items and were not due to any mechanical issues. I also have an external oil cooler controlled by a Mocal thermo tucked up under the right rear fender. The car runs like a champ and modern fuel injection is a wonderful thing.

The tranny is a stock 5 speed 901 unit with new syncros in first and second gears. Unfortunately, the third gear syncro looked good to me so I didn

Dion, does the car have even a modicum of air conditioning, or is it hot to drive on an 80-90 degree day?
I might be interested. My car needs nothing but paint, and I'm kind of attached to it ... But somehow you hit a nerve worth investigating. No air conditioning with that monster engine could be a deal-breaker ...
Drop me a line?

Cory,

Thanks for the note. The car doesn't have air conditioning (or heat for that matter). I just got back from a very spirited 20 mile drive and it's partly cloudy and 95 degrees. Yes, when you are sitting at a light, it gets hot with the top off. But, blasting through the local back roads is when you get to make your own air conditioning. You can not feel any heat from the engine even though it's right behind your back, and that includes when you are sitting still.

If that's your car in the pic, it looks like a lot of fun. I used to do a lot of track stuff including racing formula vee, but this 914 has never seen the track. It would be a blast with all the power available, but for now it's just a fast road car. Although I'm probably looking for something with more of a stock look to it, I'd love to see more pics of yours I'll try to find your picture album.

My engine's a 2.4 Type IV. Lots of goodies, and I'm far enough into this to have bought a couple Becks by now, or a used IM-6. Nothing was half-assed on the build, and the car flies like a jet fighter. It's faster than any other air-cooled, four-cylinder Speedster on the East Coast (Howard Bobrow's 911-powered Intermeccanica is probably faster), and weighs next to nothing. It's engineered well.
You'd have to drive it on a PPI to appreciate it -- but probably every Speedster owner on the East Coast has driven the Hoopty -- you could get an opinion from any of them regarding the car's well-being.

Naturally, I'd be wanting to have a really good look at the 914 before I commit to a deal, but I'm absolutely interested. Like really, this could be cool. E-mail me on hooptypilot AT gmail DOT com for a phone number. We should talk.

Alan, iconic or not ... An itch is an itch.

What we have here, Rich, are two guys who spent some bucks to build cool cars -- but the cars are outside the lines of resale. Nobody's going to pay either one of us what we have into them.
Trading is a viable option, in that case.

I wasn't considering selling my car at all, but I'm intrigued.
I gotcha Cory, that's how I got my Speedster, through a trade. I see your logic. But as Alan mentions, there's just something about Projekt Hoopty and YOU. I like your concern for air conditioning...no questions about a heater, cool air in the face is your only concern. Could it be any other way for you? Nothing wrong with dreaming about stuff I always tell my wife...then I usually move on them (without her blessing, of course).
Cory,

No problem. That looks like a fun car, and I understand being vested in a car. None of my 914 friends know I'm doing this either..... I'm probably looking for something a little more 'stock' anyway, but maybe one day we can swap drives. :)

Sorry, not interested in a flared car, but thanks for asking.

I'll add more pics to my folder.

Mark - assume it's the red one in your picture files? Looks interesting, maybe a little older than I'm targeting, but I like the color combo. Also looks like you are on the left coast, and I really don't want a car that I can't see up close. I wouldn't want you to get mine without the same courtesy either.

We've done it there several times, but got kinda tired of all the obnoxious bikers. There are plenty of roads that are at least - or even more - challenging in the area, but you should do the Dragon at least once so you can have bragging rights. Our Fall Smokies run this year (Mountain Madness) is based in Asheville, but that is not a long drive from the Dragon. You could do the Dragon on the way to Asheville, from Asheville, or both. Yesterday was the official cutoff for the room rate at the Hilton in Asheville where we are all staying, but you might be able to sweet talk them if you contact them today or tomorrow. Come join the crazies!
Date? Of course the better half has me very booked up the rest of the year, but let me know.

By the way, I appreciate all of the great responses on and offline, but I'm still looking for the right car! Also, I'll post more pics when I get back in front of my PC. Can't figure out how to copy pics off of my iPad into my pictures file.

Added more pics to my folder - let me know if you want to see more, or specific parts of the car.

I was swapping emails with a friend of mine who used to be into Speedsters, has had a number of them, and was a member of this board. He now has a 914 similar to mine, and he has ridden in mine while I drove it 'in anger'. He tells me that I'm nuts for trading it for a Speedster and that I'll miss the go-kart handling and loads of power under my foot. I believe him, and I will miss it.

But I'm still looking. :)
