I figured I should start a new topic about these, since they’re so popular and there are bits of info about them scattered all over the site.

After learning that Tire Rack no longer had the 195’s in stock, I made a call to the guy @NapaPaul knows. He gave me some (semi) hopeful info. He said they generally do a run of these once a year. Used to be in January, but due to Covid, that was pushed back until May, and then again until Sept. (Probably due, in part, to the new factory bit that Carey posted in build Bruce’s thread.)

The good news: both the 195’s and 205’s are still listed in Michael’s Vredestein vendor website, with an available date of 10/1/21. He said they’re an extremely popular tire for VWs, 356s and early 911/912’s and all sorts of 70-80’s sports cars worldwide and he seriously doubts they’ll be discontinued, but they may be improved. (Sportrac 6s?)

I put a reminder in my calendar to call him 10/1.

After sleeping on Danny’s post for a couple of days, something occurred to me: I rarely drive my car above 7/10ths, and if I do, it’s for 5-6 miles at a time.

IOW, there’s no reason for me to chase the holy grail. TBH, the Quadtracs are a much better option for several reasons:

Quadtracs are directional which means I can rotate my rears L-R and  double the tire life because of the camber I have on my rears vs the asymmetrical Sportracs.

Both the V-rated 185’s and my preferred 205’s are readily available.

There is no temperature restriction on the Quads which would necessitate me storing Sports indoors in winter here in Utah.

Based on that, I think I’ll go with the Quadtracs.  Based on the improved ride quality and handling they provide over the OEM Continentals i used to run on my Smart, I think they’ll be perfect for me.

These should come with every Speedster and Spyder,

I think they do, now that Carey cornered the market.

”Now to get Vredestein to keep on making them."

I’m confident they will, but I could see them coming out with a new, more expensive version. “Sportrac 6”

According to Paul’s guy down in Florida, they’re hugely popular in Europe with classic sports car owners.   They will be here, too, once the word gets out.

@DannyP Love it. The sway bar took it from around 8 to 10, the tires went to 11. Thanks man!

Now I just have to get myself up there. But with a forecast like this, I won't be out testing for at least a week.

The 195s look just a touch wider than the P4s, but this just might be an illusion. I'll have to measure them.

The tread on the Vreds do hold onto gravel longer than the P4s. I might have to put the aluminum stone guards higher on the production list.

I also got some black Track Stud lug nuts. They use a 17mm socket vs the 19mm for the old ones. They save about a 3rd of a pound. I kinda like the look of the old fatter lug nuts, scale wise, but whatever.

Shhh! Let's keep it a secret just among this Knucklehead Clan or else the price will REALLY go up with the new demand.

FWIW, the Quadtracs I replaced the OEM Contis on my Smart car are the same. Same sizes, but the Vredestein look lower and wider. And I’m constantly thinking they’re under inflated when they’re not. I’m sure the softer sidewall is a large part of why they have a better ride than the Contis did.
