Since a couple of months I drive my VMC Speedster here in Germany. We are not having sun all day long, not even in summer. It happens that a shower is comming up while driving on highways.
Result : 1 quart of water on the floor on both sides .

I wonder where it is comming from.
Spend a lot of efforts to seal the windscreen frame r+l. Even on top between frame and roof. - I added rubber gaskets on both doors, A-pillar and B-pillar.
I closed the whole lhs where the cables are entering from the wing on top of the fuse box. I put grease in the windshield wiper-openings.
The roof is water tight. There are no obvious water leaks from inside.
The bottom of VW pan seems to be OK, however I re-sealed some areas where it looks suspicios. There is a rubber boot where the shifting rod is entering the VW-pan. I can seem foam had been spryed by VMS between body and pan in front of the engine.

I suspect that the air-drag of the closed roof is sucking water into the floor area - you can feel cold air is comming out of the handbrake/ heater lever while driving with closed roof. But you can not see it.

The air from handbrake is less when the roof is open.
Can you give some advise ? (other than to avoid driving in sunny weather only ;-)

Thank you
Bjoern from Germany.

Had ever dreamed of a super wide body....

Bjoern - A common area that leaks on many cars is at the very rear of the cockpit behind the seats.  Water from the street gets thrown outward as the wheel spins and some gets thrown forward against the body inside of the wheel well where it finds a small opening between the pan and the body.  From there it can run forward in the cockpit as you apply the brakes and get under foot.   😡

Look just above where the shift rod rubber boot is.  There is often a gap just above the central tunnel that needs to be filled with silicon caulk or foam.  From the top of central tunnel, follow the pan/body seam towards the outside L/R sides and seal all along the seam.  Silicon caulk or foam will work here - Silicon caulk makes a neater look, nut it may be difficult to get the caulk in where you want it so spray foam might work better.

The same applies to the pan/body seam at the front of the cockpit and the fix is the same.  Start at the top of the tunnel from the gas tank side (remove the front wheels for easier access) and fill any open spots with caulk or foam from the central tunnel out to the L/R corners of the cockpit.

I assume that no water is getting in at the bottom, front, corner of the side windows - I had to mess with my window seals for a while before I cured that pesky leak in that corner.  Water would come in and run down the door edge and onto the floor.

That’s all I’ve got.   Gordon

Bjoern, as noted above, this is a common problem with our cars since they replicate the original Speedsters. Gordon has made great headway at identifying leaky areas and figuring out ways to slow the flow rate.

I've done the big things (especially paying attention to the area under the rear package tray (or seat if you're feeling euphemistic).

The main thing I've done is to take out the carpet behind the seats, pour in some water to see where the lowest points are, and drill a hole in the floors behind each seat to make sure that the water that gets in drains out.

I put rust proofing around the holes after the drilling, too. Good luck!

Bjoern, congratulations on your VMC Speedster. You should have lots of fun with it. Please continue to let us know how it's going for you.

I do admit that I'm surprised you got a quart of water on each side. I would have thought that it would have been closer to a liter...

Good luck and enjoy your Speedster when the weather permits!
